Concrete demand boosts profits in Australia
19 August 2010
Adelaide Brighton Ltd has increased first half profit 57 per cent and the cement and lime supplier expects higher demand for its products to continue in 2010/11.
Net profit rose to $68.8 million for the six months to June 30 compared with $43.9 million in the prior corresponding period, the Adelaide-based company said in a statement on Thursday.
Adelaide Brighton said there had been an increased demand for lime and concrete during the period, primarily from infrastructure projects in South Australia and the resources sector in Western Australia.

The company said the higher Australian dollar positively impacted import margins and increased energy costs were offset by cost management programs.
In its outlook, the company said it expected demand for cement to remain strong through 2010.
It expects lime demand to be higher in 2010 than it was last year, due to demand from the non-alumina sector.
"Based on current market conditions, Adelaide Brighton expects a net profit after tax for 2010 of between $140 and $150 million," the company said.
But it did flag uncertainty surrounding contract renewal and demand in the concrete masonry market.
"(There is) uncertainty around some cement and lime supply contracts expiring at the end of 2010 and during 2011, however Adelaide Brighton is cautiously confident of renewal on acceptable terms," the company said.
It expects "continued weakness in the concrete masonry market in the second half due to depressed commercial and multi-residential segments."
Revenue rose 12 per cent to $519.4 million.
The company said it would pay an interim dividend of 7.5 cents per share, fully franked, along with a special dividend of 2.5 cents per share.
