UOKiK penalises cement price cartel
(Poland) -- Cementownia Ozarow has been ordered to pay a fine of PLN 2m (€530,000) for withholding information and obstructing the inspection process, the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has announced.
The fine was imposed following legal proceedings launched by the UOKiK in April 2006 against 11 cement manufacturers. The government suspects the companies of forging a price cartel, setting the terms of sale, dividing up the market between themselves and exchanging confidential business information.
Cash penalties for impeding inspections are only very rarely implemented. This is only the second case when the president of the UOKiK has resorted to such a measure. The decision is not final.
French group Lafarge decided to freeze its project of construction of a new cement plant in the Lvov Province in Ukraine.
