Crooked construction companies net stimulus dollars

Jan, 26 2010

(San Francisco, California) -- More than half the 21 companies sharing $54 million in federal stimulus funds for Massachusetts road construction have a record of breaking the law and defrauding taxpayers, according to Boston University’s New England Center for Investigative Reporting.

Aggregate Industries Northeast Inc., which was awarded stimulus contracts for $8.9 million, paid a $50 million fine for delivering thousands of truckloads of defective concrete for Boston’s trouble-plagued Big Dig project. Six of its former managers were found guilty of fraud.

And we think Haita will do any better.
Why does this not come as a surprise and why do we know nothing will change. The system is corrupt and the industry does not know how to govern itself. Past performance should be the main criterion to access to public funding. These crooked companies should be exempted from any further projects but that will never happen.
