Expansion proposal for Cemex quarry site near
Feb, 17 2012
A QUARRY near Bryncoch could be expanded.
Plans for Gilfach Quarry have been submitted to Neath Port Talbot Council.
(UK) -- CEMEX UK Operations Ltd, which owns the quarry, is planning an extension to extract pennant sandstone.
The proposed move is expected to provide an increased life for the quarry, of up to 20 years.
Twelve full-time employees are likely to be retained for the duration of operations, and the development also provides additional employment to hauliers and service industries.
In a report for councillors to discuss at the planning and development control committee on Tuesday, it states that the extension area would yield a reserve of some 8.4 million tonnes.
The report says: "It is proposed in the application to carry out soil stripping, overburden removal, and mineral working between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 6am to 12pm on Saturdays.
"No Sunday or public bank holiday work is proposed."
Responding to the application, Blaenhonddan Community Council said it was "seriously concerned about the impact on the environment in relation to the application."
Neath Port Talbot Badger Group also raised concerns and has objected to the proposals in respect of badger setts in the area and the impact it might have on the badger population.
Only two letters from residents have been received in response to the application.
Issues include concerns about the impact on their private water supply and it was suggested that "adequate conditions" needed to be imposed to prevent the impacts of dust, noise and blasting.
Bryncoch South councillor Tony Wyn-Jones said he gave the expansion the thumbs up if it would secure jobs.
"I'm all for it if it means it provides employment," he said.
"At the moment everything is being scaled down."
Council chiefs have considered the proposal to be in "general accordance with the development plan, local planning strategies and environmental policies."
The application has been recommended for approval with conditions.
