Students visit Lafarge cement plant

May, 03 2012

(Michigan) -- Recently, eleven MBA students and members of Michigan State University’s Graduate Supply Chain Management Association (GSCMA) as well as Dr. Judith Whipple, Supply Chain Management faculty member, toured Lafarge’s Alpena cement plant, the second largest cement plant in North America.

The MSU contingent was able to meet with employees from Lafarge’s cement plant and its sister company, Systech Environmental Corporation. Prior to the visit, students were given a series of case studies on current issues facing the Alpena facility.

Students prepared initial improvement ideas that were discussed after touring the facility. The visit and opportunity to brainstorm creative solutions for the facility was an excellent experience for the attendees and helped to apply classroom techniques to a unique industry setting.
