The recent changes in trommel fines is having massive implications in the industry



(UK)  --  Trommel fines are the smaller fraction materials that fall through trommels at a size ranging from 30mm – 0mm to 100mm – 0mm. Regarding the changes of trommel fines, this has been reclassified to the higher band of tax. So instead of costing £3-5 per tonne it is now more like £70-80 per tonne. So the average firm who produces 100 tonne per day or 500 tonne per week will see their costs rise from approx £2000 per week to £37,000 per week. That's over £1.8m per year to get rid of trommel fines. This if enforced fully will put many skip firms out of business.

We supply a highly specialised density separator designed specifically to handle trommel fines called the Max X Tract. The Max-X-Tract unit is designed to separate materials less than 100mm according to their density and physical size. Our solution will separate this waste stream into the following products – wood, stone and rubble, lights, fines ( -8mm), ferrous and non ferrous. We have been active in this market sector for some time but recent changes has increased demand for the Max X Tract. Typical separation of construction and demolition waste by weight is wood at 10-15%, stone at 30-35%, lights at 10-15%, fines at 25-30%, ferrous at 3-5% and non ferrous at 0.5-1%.

The new legislation will certainly drive materials away from landfill but the flip side is by separating the materials, the products such as wood, stone, ferrous and non ferrous metals can all be sold at market values. We can recover up to 75% of the weight of trommel fines.
