(South Carolina) -- Major was recently named the 2012 Mining Association of South Carolina (MASC) Miner of the Year.

Major is from Jamestown, and began his mining career with Southern Aggregates in 1983. He held several positions with Martin Marietta before becoming plant manager of the Georgetown II Quarry in Jamestown.

In addition to his plant manager duties, Major has managed a reclamation crew at the Martin Marietta North Columbia and Berkeley Quarries for the past 18 months.

During his 29 years in the mining industry, Major has transitioned operations from Southern Aggregates to Martin Marietta, and assisted in opening new operations in Berkeley County. In a slow economy he was able to utilize his current workforce to create a grading/reclamation crew for Martin Marietta's South Carolina District.
