Cemex dropping gravel quarry plan

(Las Vegas) -- A Mexico-based company is dropping its controversial effort to dig a mile-square gravel quarry over 20 years on federal land south of Las Vegas.
The southern Nevada regional manager for Cemex Construction Materials Pacific said in a June 5 letter to Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak the company won't pursue the project south of Henderson.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Cemex official Stephen Wild says the company is working with the federal Bureau of Land Management on other possible sites.
The County Commission and Nevada elected officials including Democratic Sen. Harry Reid and Republican Sen. Dean Heller have joined Henderson residents worried the Sloan Hills quarry will be noisy and foul the air and water.
California-based Service Rock Products is still seeking BLM approval to excavate the site.
