(Toronto, Canada) -- A section of Bathurst St. was closed this morning after chunks of concrete fell onto the roadway from the Gardiner Expressway.
Police blocked off the road between Fort York and Lake Shore Blvds. for traffic and pedestrians. TTC streetcar service is diverting.
The road will be closed until an investigation by the city’s chief engineer clears the area.
John Bryson, manager of structures and expressways. said the piece was “significant but not as big as some of the pieces we chipped off.”
Bryson said it’s likely the extreme heat and humidity loosened the concrete causing it to chip off onto the road below.
“(The heat) may have caused more movement in the high beams than we’re used to,” he said.
The passerby who reported the incident to police was not injured.
This is the fifth time in three months that concrete has fallen off the aging highway.
Last month, a baseball -ized piece of concrete hit and damaged a vehicle driving underneath the overpass on Lake Shore near Yonge St.
