Position Summary:
The prime objectives of this position are to:

Lead the development, implementation and auditing of a Division wide Health & Safety program based on the Lafarge Group Health and Safety Standards and Policies

Design, implement and coordinate the Health and Safety programs for the North American Gypsum business with the goal of further developing and maintaining a culture of health and safety excellence.

Provide leadership to Safety Coordinators and Sponsors to identify best practices and foster their adoption in all Gypsum operations. Ensure consistent approach across all plants.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Lead the implementation for Gypsum of the North American Safety and health initiatives and standards
-
Communicate with plant managers to set safety and health goals and objectives, resolve issues and identify safety and health improvement opportunities for Gypsum.

Working closely with the Management Team and Plant Managers, identify best practices through Benchmarking and foster their adoption at all plants
-
Monitor federal and state agencies for regulatory changes and advise operations of same. Work with Gypsum plants and operations to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (federal, provincial/ state and municipal)

Lead the implementation and monitoring of the Group/ Gypsum occupational health strategic plan to ensure due diligence and to maintain a safe and healthful work environment for Lafarge employees and contractors. Coordinate health and industrial hygiene monitoring as needed.

Develop and maintain data management system to ensure that all relevant safety documentation and record keeping across sites are properly managed, available on request, archived and updated.

Coordinate site audit according and inspection programs, lead audits and site inspections personally and ensure corrective actions are completed.

Provide expertise for investigations of health and safety concerns and incidents, drive the development of corrective actions and follow-up mechanisms and ensure communication of relevant information to Management and all employees.

Lead the development and implementation of health and safety communications for the Gypsum business. Manage the efficient distribution of health and safety resources within the Business.

Lead the development of a training framework and program for plant management and for supervisors.

Train the trainer to educate and train plant and operations personnel on safety and health standards and policies.

Facilitate worker’s compensation case management and return to work programs with plant management and Human Resources.

60% of time to be spent in manufacturing facilities interacting with operations
Specific Results/Accountabilities

Timely tracking and reporting of Health and Safety KPIs and assuring achievements

Develop and maintain knowledge of current applicable legislation, act as a resource to GMT and plant management

Drive behaviors which support “world class” health and safety culture. Communicate effectively with Top Management and Plant Managers to identify system, program and training needs for the Gypsum Business.

Timely and accurate conduct of health and safety audits and compliance with corporate policy

Provide operations with training, guidance and directions regarding compliance with all government regulatory agencies and corporate Health and Safety policy

Reporting and analysis of Safety results to Gypsum Association

Director of Safety (Cement/ A&C US): Ensure coordination on all North American Health and Safety initiatives

Plant Managers and Operations Managers: to ensure that all Health and Safety activities are staffed and carried out adequately

Engineering Manager: To facilitate CAPEX projects on Health and Safety improvements

Liaison with Key customer contacts to share best practices for Health and Safety Management

Liaison with various regulatory agencies to establish good will and early warning of emerging health and safety issues and developments.

Senior Management to provide clarity, accountability and credibility in health and safety leadership
Qualification Profile:
Educational Background :
-
Education preferred: University degree in Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, Business, Safety, Public Health or equivalent. Graduate Degree, P. Eng. not essential but asset
-
Professional certifications in the areas of Safety/Risk Management are strongly desired.
Experience and skills:
-
10 or more years in increasingly Senior Environmental Health and Safety positions including 3-5 years in a construction materials related industry

Strong knowledge of Safety legislation and regulations at federal, state, provincial and local level
-
Strong knowledge of OSHA and Worker’s Compensation and Workers Compensation Claims Management.

Facilitator or training skills, along with computer proficiency in MS Office.

Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and crisis communication

Strong leadership with emphasis on change management, principled, proven track record of relationship building.
