A look at the first cement statistics from Latin America in 2014


In the first month of 2014, cement sales on the national market increased by 6.8% y/y to reach 5.91 million t. In comparison, 5.534 million t of cement was sold in the corresponding month in 2013, and 5.059 t was dispatched in the preceding month of December 2013.


Portland cement plants dispatched 931 738 t of cement in January 2014, including exports. Volumes were 0.4% higher than in December 2013 and 2% higher than in January 2013. Domestic consumption fell by 0.5% m/m but rose by 2.5% y/y to 910 379 t.


Around 11.3 million t of grey cement was produced in 2013, up 3% on 2012. Domestic cement sales increased by 3.5% y/y to reach 10.87 million t.

Colombia’s National Mining Agency (La Agencia Nacional de Minera) has announced that coal production fell by 4% y/y (or 3.7 million t) to 85.5 million t in 2013. Around 94.3% of the coal produced was exported, with the remainder going to Colombia’s cement and steel industries, as well as to thermo electric facilities.

However, production picked up in 4Q13, which experienced growth of 18% y/y and 30% q/q.
