Anchor Stone denied Oklahoma quarry expansion

Anchor Stone has been denied permission to expand its quarry in Owasso, Oklahoma.

The long-established quarry to the east of Owasso is attempting to expand again after previously being denied in 2003.

At its Thursday, Oct 8, meeting, the Owasso Economic Development Authority unanimously voted against a resolution city staff had proposed. Owasso City Council voted 4-0 in favor of supporting the resolution at its Tuesday, Oct 6, meeting.

“We cannot mine north or south to a certain point. It made sense to us and residents to connect the dots and grow the quarries together and not outward,” said David Charney, chairman of Tulsa County Board of Adjustment.

City staff is opposed to the expansion due to the potential impact on residents’ homes and quality of life.
