Braen Stone Industries Haledon quarry expansion threat

Expansion plans for the Braen Stone Industries Haledon, New Jersey, quarry are under threat from local residents.

Haledon town mayor and council discussed the matter in closed session after a council meeting on July 17. Before adjourning the regular meeting, Mayor Domenick Stampone told residents that every option for possibly fighting the contract will be considered.

“It’s my job to make sure that if this is not good for Haledon, it doesn’t proceed,” Stampone said.
Borough Attorney Andrew Oddo later confirmed the town is measuring the construction contract’s likely impact on residents.

A recent deal approved between the Board of Freeholders and Braen Stone Industries of Haledon, the quarry owners allows Braen to blast rock on 27 acres of county-owned property at the Haledon/Wayne border, property containing the abandoned Preakness Hospital, which buffers neighborhoods 1,000 feet away from the quarry construction.

The freeholders have yet to comment on the contract directly, though spokesperson Keith Furlong said the interests of county taxpayers are what drove the agreement. Braen’s deal will net the county roughly $22 million over 25 years, revenue created from land that had little value, Furlong said.

In lieu of property taxes, the freeholders included annual payments of $39,000 to Haledon and $17,000 to Wayne until the lease expires in 2032.

In 1993, a land-lease between Braen and the freeholders on a similar property had residents up in arms when quarry operations moved closer to their homes.

A lawsuit also emerged in the late 90s when the town tried to restrict Braen’s day and night-time activity.

The borough settled out of court, reaching an agreement that limited Braen’s night-time operations to 55 nights a year and set weekday hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

On the Preakness property, Braen will be allowed to excavate as soon as the hospital buildings are demolished within the next year.
