Cement plant sold to Mexico firm?

Cement plant sold to Mexico firm? DIXON, IL – Official sources are not commenting on reports that Dixon Marquette Cement Inc. of Dixon is in the process of being sold to CEMEX U.S. Operations, a subsidiary of CEMEX of Mexico. Jorge Perez of Monterrey, Mexico, declined to comment on whether the firm purchased the Dixon Marquette operations Tuesday. Local plant officials at Dixon Marquette also declined comment. Local sources say each of the company’s 120 employees were required to undergo interviews at a local motel recently. They were required to reapply for their particular position. There were conflicting stories on how many employees might be retained by the new company. The sources say the new company is slated to take over as soon as it receives approval of the sale by a governmental agency, probably the Federal Trade Commission. According to its Web site, CEMEX is one of the largest cement companies in world. The purchase, if approved, would make Dixon the 13th cement plant in the CEMEX chain with a network that stretches from California to Florida and from Texas to the Great Lakes. Begun in 1907 by the Sandusky Portland Cement Co. and later sold to the Medusa Portland Cement Co., the Dixon company produced 19,556 barrels the first year. In 1979 the company was taken over by the Crane Corp. It eventually was sold to Lone Star Industries and more recently has been known as Dixon Marquette. By 1990 the company’s production reached 600,000 tons per year.
