Cemex UK uses powerfloating technology for the first time

August 24, 2018

Cemex UK has laid over 40,000 tonnes of roller compacted concrete (RCC) at the Warboys Industrial Estate in Huntingdon in East England on behalf of GPS PE Pipe Systems. The company says it used powerfloating technology for the first time to provide a pavement with a harder wearing surface.

The new process, a development in the RCC pavements, provides an engineered pavement which is fast to lay with the appearance and durability of a conventional concrete surface.

Garry Gregory, director asphalt and paving solutions, at Cemex UK, says the customer was provided with a pavement solution which combines the strength and durability of concrete with the ease of asphalt construction.

“RCC alone delivers significant cost savings of up to 30% over traditional pavements, and now with powerfloated technology, RCC offers a significantly harder wearing surface that’s more aesthetically pleasing,” Gregory adds.

The surface is produced by spraying a specially designed admixture onto the roller compacted concrete before power floating and curing.

According to Cemex UK: “This creates a more closed, even surface than the more textured appearance of natural RCC. The smooth cement paste created during this process offers increased abrasion resistance, making it attractive for high stress areas.”
