Coal ash not a hazardous waste says EPA

Coal industry officials agree with the EPA’s decision not to designate coal ash as a hazardous waste.

This was the third time environmental and public health groups had pushed for categorizing coal ash as a hazardous waste because of it’s effect on the environment.

Al Christianson with Great River Energy says using the substance to make cement actually saves CO2 gas from being produced.

He also points out that North Dakota produces about 3.5 million tons of fly ash– 40 percent of which is recycled.

“Only the states that have not been in the lead like ND will have to change things.  The environmentalists if they really take a strong look at this, they will realize that at the state level, that is where it’s going to be controlled and that’s where it should be because the citizens of that state, should have the right to say what takes place in their state.” says Al Christianson with Great River Energy

Christianson says the coal ash is marketed in ND, SD, Minnesota, Colorado, Montana, and Canada.
