Deadly explosion at Scappoose Sand & Gravel

A 43-year-old woman was killed in an explosion in Scappoose on Thanksgiving Day.

The accident happened at Scappoose Sand and Gravel in an area leased by the partner of the victim,  Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to tyhe Sheriff’s Office, the woman was working with her partner on a repair when the explosion happened shortly after 1pm. 

The Sheriff’s Office said the woman or her partner was grinding a piece of metal when it ignited a leaking bottle of flammable gas.

The woman died instantly of massive trauma. Emergency crews located and closed the leaking bottle when they arrived.

The woman’s name has not been released. The Sheriff’s Office and OHSA are investigating the incident.
