Death at Asphalt Plant on Martin Marietta Property

One person died in the explosion Thursday morning.(KINGS MOUNTAIN, North Carolina) – An early morning explosion rocked a Kings Mountain asphalt site killing one person and now investigators are combing the scene trying to find out why. The accident happened near Interstate 85 and Highway 161 at a quarry called Martin Marietta Aggregates. Rea Contracting has an asphalt plant at the property, which is where the accident happened. The 911 call came in as an explosion. Soon after Rea Contracting confirmed it was a fatal accident and said the man died at the scene. Kings Mountain police are trying to contact his family members. His name is expected to be released later Thursday. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Kings Mountain detectives, along with OSHA, are at the scene. “Very small explosion. Typically when you say explosion you think of fire and heat, that was not the case in this,” said Derek Johnson, Kings Mountain Police Department. “It could have been a pressurized type explosion or a dust explosion.” No other injuries were reported. Police said Martin Marietta Aggregates played no part in the cause of the accident. By NICOLE KONKAL / 6NEWS
