EPA takes action over quarry noise

The NSW Environment Protection Authority confirmed that the Daracon-owned Buttai Gravel Pty Ltd had breached its Environment Protection Licence conditions by allowing the ?quarry to operate before 6am.
Paterson Progress Association ?secretary Zoltan Lyall said Martins Creek residents had raised concerns about early morning noise at the quarry.
The high volume of truck movements, mainly those associated with the quarry, has also been a concern because of the noise pollution.
Mr Lyall said trucks often travelled to the quarry as early as 5.30am.
“No matter which direction we go, the regulation only seems to involve what happens in the quarry itself,” he said.
“The EPA should protect all environments.”
Noisy activities are only allowed at the quarry between 6am and 6pm, Monday  to Saturday, according to EPA guidelines.
EPA north director Gary Davey said early-morning observations and a site inspection on April 2 led to action against the quarry operator.
He said the EPA had received a ?number of complaints from residents about the quarry’s operating hours.
“During the inspection, the EPA noted that operational noise from the premises was clearly audible at residential receivers near the quarry between 5.10am and 6am on April 2, 2014,” he said.
“This included noise from truck movements and idling, reversing alarms, air brakes, light vehicle traffic and what appeared to be the loading of aggregate into a trailer.”
Buttai Gravel was issued a second penalty notice for having inadequate sediment and erosion controls at a large strip area at the site.
Mr Davey said this could lead to ?pollution of nearby catchments and waterways.
