A tractor-trailer overturned, spilling gravel and blocking the on-ramp of southbound Highway 99 in Merced on 18 June, says the California Highway Patrol. According to a report by the Merced Sun-Star: “The driver, 70-year-old Daniel Souza of Merced, was trapped in the 2016 Peterbilt for a short time before he was freed by emergency responders.”
The report says he suffered minor non-life threatening injuries and was flown to Modesto hospital as a precaution.
According to investigators, Souza was travelling on West 16th Street and entered the highway around 25 to 30 mph when the truck overturned. There was a small diesel spill which was quickly contained.
