Lafarge opens Brooklyn cement terminal

(New York) — Lafarge in North America dedicated its new cement terminal at the 25th Street Pier in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. The 6.8-acre facility is a storage and distribution point for cement and cementitious materials from Lafarge’s Ravena cement plant near Albany, NY, and serves construction markets in the greater New York City area. The Brooklyn Terminal provides the area with a sustainable source of U.S. produced cement. Until now, the majority of the bulk cement in the region has been imported. It is centrally located and accessible by way of surface roads and maritime terminals. It is of particular benefit for large-scale projects, such as the rebuilding of lower Manhattan and redevelopment of the Hudson Yards.Lafarge is leasing the 25th Street pier site from the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) through 2025, and has invested more than $20 million in renovations to the pier, capital improvements and new equipment.EDC selected Lafarge to redevelop the site in 2004 and the terminal became operational in June 2006. The project represents a step forward in the city’s plan to revitalize Brooklyn as a commercial port. The project is part of a long-standing relationship between Lafarge and the city of New York. The company’s materials have been used in the construction of many projects, including the World Trade Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH) station, JFK International Airport, the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium and the revival of Times Square.
