Lockport approves Lafarge’s stone quarry proposal

May 11, 2018

The Lockport Town Board has voted in favour of Lafarge North America’s plan to open a new stone quarry on Hinman Road. According to The Buffalo News: “The company will pay the town a nickel per ton of stone, a projected average of $75,000 a year.”

Perry A. Galdenzi, project manager at Lafarge says in the report: “The first blasting may not occur until 2019.”

The town did not approve mining for the last 40 acres of the estimated 200-acre site. Galdenzi adds: "the rest of the site has enough stone to last about 30 years."

Lafarge North America will maintain a $500,000 fund to compensate homeowners within 1,000 feet of the quarry for any damages to property or lost property values. The zone may be enlarged following complaints from residents outside the radius.
