Luck Stone Owners Among Virginia’s Richest

Virginia’s richest residents Not a single Culpeper resident made the recent list of Virginia’s 84 richest people/families. The median household income in Culpeper County, by the way, is about $50,000, according to the latest Census figures from 2003.The Mars family of northern Virginia, on the other hand, is the wealthiest in the commonwealth – the candy clan is worth some $10 billion, according to Virginia Business Magazine’s “2006 Virginia 100,” published this month.Coming in at a distant second was the Winkler family of Alexandria – real estate powerhouses valued at $1.8 billion.Sheila Johnson of The Plains in neighboring Fauquier County was not too far behind as the third richest Virginian with a net worth of $1.5 billion, according to the Virginia 100 list. Johnson and her former husband, Robert Johnson, founded Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 1980. She is president and general manager of the female Washington Mystics and part owner of the NBA’s Washington Wizards.Number four, five and six, respectively, on the list include a Virginia Beach billionaire descended from the inventor of Off insect repellant and Glade air freshener; a Virginia Beach communications guru and philanthropist; and an Alexandria couple that led the wireless industry and are worth $1 billion.Rounding out the top 10 is yet another mega land developer; the co-founder of America Online; a “global energy” businessman with ties to Middleburg and a Fredericksburg-based real estate developer.Several newsmen also made the Virginia 100 including Frank Batten Jr. of Norfolk, chairman and CEO of Landmark Communications Inc., a private company that owns The Weather Channel. Batten is valued at $700 million.Arthur W. “Nick” Arundel of The Plains is founder, chairman and publisher of the Times Community Newspaper, owner of The Culpeper Citizen. Arundel is worth some $100 million, according to Virginia Business Magazine, a Media General publication – the Culpeper Star-Exponent’s Richmond-based parent company.The Bryan family of Richmond, a longtime publishing clan, is worth some $66 million, Virginia Business reports. This includes J.
