M-DOT Director Gloria Jeff resigns; last day is Friday

(Michigan) Gloria Jeff, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation, announced her resignation Monday. Her last day is Friday. M-DOT officials said they did not know the reason for Jeff’s resignation or how long her departure had been in the works but said that for the past 15 years, the average term for M-DOT directors has been 3.1 years. Jeff, a former deputy administrator of the Federal Highway Administration under President Bill Clinton, was appointed M-DOT director by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in January 2003. Jeff was the first woman and first African-American to serve as director of M-DOT. Granholm on Monday appointed Kirk Steudle, chief deputy director of the department, as Jeff’s replacement. In a statement, M-DOT credited Jeff for doubling the level of state investment in local bridge repairs and rehabilitations and for developing an investment strategy to bring 90 percent of Michigan roads into good condition by 2007. Jeff also worked to create a dialogue among shippers, carriers and border operators in the U.S. and Canada and to position M-DOT to view itself as an integrated transportation system and not just the “highway department,” the statement said. “We were fortunate to have Gloria Jeff’s expertise and talent for as long as we did,” Granholm said in a news release. “Michigan’s transportation system has improved under her watch, as have transportation partnerships that help make Michigan such a great place to live and work. We wish her well.” Steudle is best known in the department for his work on the Asset Management Council, a state and local group that annually assesses the condition of Michigan roads.By Michelle Martinez
