Mine safety December inspections

The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s inspectors issued 132 citations and two orders during special impact inspections conducted at 10 coal mines and five metal and nonmetal mines in December 2016.

MSHA conducted special impact inspections at mines in Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Forty-eight of those citations and both orders were issued to metal/non-metal mines. The MSHA list shows Lafarge Building Materials in New York received 32 citations, four of which were significant and substantial; Fairmount Santrol’s Wedron Plant in Illinois received nine citations, four of which were significant and substantial, and one order; New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co.’s Mt Cydonia Sand Plant I in Pennsylvania received two citations; and Simpson Sand & Gravel’s Simpson Pit in Washington received one order.

The most noted justifications for the citations were listed as Enforcement History and Hazard Complaints/Hotline Calls.
