Nature reserve plan as quarry closes

Nature reserve plan as quarry closes (UK) A NORTH Wales quarry has stopped production and will close next month.Environmentalists are now campaigning for the Fagl Lane quarry, at Hope, near Wrexham, to be transformed into a nature reserve.Nine workers will be made redundant although it is hoped some can be found work at the company’s other quarries. A spokesman for owners Hansons said: “We bought the quarry in 2000 and since then we have had some real problems in getting material out of the ground.”We have nine staff and we are trying to find them jobs at our other quarries. Some are near retirement age and happy to take the redundancy.”Production has already stopped and the quarry will officially close by Easter.”The spokesman added: “We will not just be closing down and leaving.”Restoration plans will have to be completed and we are looking to work closely with environmental groups.Hanson – the American-owned multi-national – bought the quarry from Tarmac who in turn purchased it from Bodfari Sand and Gravel.Quarry working has left a 30-acre lake at Fagl Lane which is already attracting wildlife.Mike Griffiths, Wrexham wildlife expert and recorder for the Mammal Society, last night called on Countryside Council for Wales to turn the site into a managed nature reserve.”Wildlife is starting to come back. We are getting birds in from Eastern Europe and what we need are more bushes planting.”It has already been agreed that on the lake we should not have speed boats or jet skis, windsurfers or things like that. But unpowered fishing boats would be acceptable,” he added.
