NRMCA’s Shamim Rashid-Sumar named SFPE fellow

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) vice president, fire codes and standards Shamim Rashid-Sumar has been named a fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE).

SFPE is a professional society that represents those practicing fire protection engineering. SFPE fellows represent a group of members who have attained significant accomplishment in engineering. They must also be members of the society for at least 10 years and have been nominated by their peers for outstanding contributions to the advancement of fire protection engineering and valuable service to SFPE.

Rashid-Sumar is based in New York and works with national model building codes and standards organisations to advocate for non-combustible construction and provides technical support regarding codes, standards, regulations and legislation at the national, state and local levels. She regularly presents and moderates at conferences and technical events.

Rashid-Sumar was previously a practice leader, Middle East, for Jensen Hughes, a safety, security and risk-based engineering and consulting firm. She has performed fire protection evaluations, prepared fire and life safety strategies and design specifications, fire alarm witness testing and commissioning, and other engineering analyses and studies. She has also worked on a range of projects including government facilities, hospitals and medical centers, airport terminals, museums, high-rise buildings, hotels, malls and special use facilities.

Additionally, Rashid-Sumar is a registered professional engineer in Delaware and holds previous registrations as a house of expertise engineer in the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. She is a former member of the United Arab Emirates Code Committee.
