Each year Ash Grove Cement Company recognizes the one manufacturing facility that exemplifies more than any other the company’s ambitious goal to have safety ingrained as part of the daily work culture.
For 2014, Ash Grove’s Durkee, Oregon, plant won the top honor in the company’s annual LT Sunderland Safety Excellence Award competition.
Since 2006, eight Ash Grove cement manufacturing plants and two grinding facilities have competed to earn the award. Each facility is evaluated on an extensive matrix of data that is focused on health and safety processes and results.
The Ash Grove Safety Leadership Steering Committee scores each of the health and safety metrics used in selecting the best overall performing plant. Those scores are tabulated, and the plant with the highest score is selected to receive the award. For 2014, the plant with the overall highest score was Durkee.
“Each year we select the top-performing plants as finalists for the award,” said Steve Minshall, Ash Grove corporate health and safety director, who also oversees the evaluation process. “For 2014, along with the winner, Durkee, the finalists were the Leamington, Utah, and Midlothian, Texas, cement manufacturing plants and the Rivergate lime plant in Portland, Oregon. These plants exhibited a high degree of health and safety competence by attaining Gold status in the company’s Safety Leadership Awards for 2014.”
This year marks the first time the Durkee plant has won the LT Sunderland Safety Excellence Award. The Leamington plant won this award three times previously. Midlothian and the Rivergate lime plant each have won the award once previously.
“Winning the LT Sunderland Safety Excellence Award is an honor for our team,” said Durkee plant manager Terry Kerby. “We work hard on our ongoing commitment to the safety of each and every employee here, and winning this award is evidence of our efforts.”
According to Minshall, each of the company’s manufacturing plants, grinding facilities and port terminals actively participate in the company’s health and safety management system which includes injury prevention, compliance management, audits and training to ensure a safe work environment for employees. “Winning the Safety Leadership award takes effort, teamwork, accountability and truly valuing the well-being of every person in the plant, and we congratulate the Durkee employees on their achievement,” Minshall said.
