Virginia’s Floyd County quarry is opening again. The sites on Shooting Creek Road has been purchased by Salem Stone Corporation of Dublin, VA.
The quarry, formerly R&S Stone, was closed last spring for upgrades as part of an investigation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The quarry was previously owned by the Reed family.
“We hope to be operating in Floyd soon,” M J O’Brien, Jr, chief executive, of the corporation, told the Press. “Our timeline is within the next 30 days or so, but we had hoped to be open by now.” The company is still doing some cleanup work at the Floyd location.
Salem Stone has 14 other quarries in Virginia and North Carolina. “We’re in the people business first and the mining business secondarily,” O’Brien said.
The company has been in business for fifty years. “Our philosophy drives our culture to include safety, environmental stewardship and involvement of the surrounding communities,” O’Brien said.
“This site has good granite and aggregate products,” he stated. “We will sell stone locally and in the surrounding counties.”
