Peter D’Amico, owner of SCB International, is this year’s recipient of the 2015 Macricostas Entrepreneur of the Year by Western Connecticut State University,
D’Amico started Bulk Materials International in 1986. That company, which later became SCB International Materials, supplies raw materials including silica, alumina and iron oxide to cement producers throughout the east and gulf coasts as well as producers in Columbia, Brazil and Japan.
The company ships more than two million tons of raw materials for the cement industry each year.
“Over the years we became very successful in finding by products from other industries and recycling them for use by the cement industry,” D’Amico said.
“The business model brings value to the supplier of the materials and value to the cement producers because we can provide the raw materials at a lower cost. We have to provide value to both our supplies and customers. If not they can just go find the products themselves.”
When larger cement producers began sourcing their own raw materials in the past few years, D’Amico said they set finding a different product they could offer their customers. The company has since developed and patented technology that makes it easier for cement producers to remove mercury from the process.
“While we developed the technology with a focus on the cement industry, we’ve found that the technology can be applied to a lot of other industries including the power industry and gold mining operations,” he said.
“We are in the process now of marketing the new technology to other industries.”
