Val Riva (CEO of ACPA) Obituary Notice and Funeral DetailsIt is with deepest regret that we inform you of the passing of Valentin (Val) J. Riva, 50, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Concrete Pavement Association. Val died Monday evening from complications following heart surgery last month.Survivors include his wife Martha (Marti) Collier Riva; children Clare, Michael, and David; parents Valentin and Elvira Riva; sisters Margarita Riva-Geoghegan and Cristina Riva-Chevez; and 10 nieces and nephews. From the moment Val became ACPA chief executive in August 1997, we know that he truly enjoyed working with our members and staff. His leadership, hard work, and dedication brought our organization and industry successes and recognition that we earlier would have not thought possible. He worked tirelessly on our behalf.Prior to joining ACPA, Val was general counsel and chief lobbyist for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association where he received the association’s Distinguished Service Award. Earlier, Val held senior and legal positions at other trade associations including the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (formerly National Stone Association), Associated General Contractors of America, and National Association of Government Employees.Born in Havana, Cuba, he earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and his B.A. in Economics (cum laude) from the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and District of Columbia Bar.Val will long be remembered for his accomplishments and sorely missed for his unique style, commitment, warmth, humor, and faith in others. Well known as a student of history, he always endeavored to embody the strength and character of great world leaders. Many saw him as a warrior-general; all who knew him saw him as a first-class friend and gentleman. His funeral service will be Monday, September 20, 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac MD 20854 (301-365-1415). A reception to immediately follow at the Congressional Country Club, 8500 River Road, Bethesda MD 20817 (301-469-2000).
