Wisconsin asphalt plant damaged by fire

An oil furnace fire at a portable asphalt plant northeast of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, yesterday morning caused damage estimated between $200,000 and $280,000.

At 5:13am the Black River Falls Fire Department was called to the Kraemer Co gravel pit in Adams, according to a Fire Department news release.

Plant operators reported finding a fire in the area of the oil furnace. They attempted to put it out with extinguishers.

About 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from a fuel tank at the plant. Plant employees built a gravel dike to contain the spill.

The plant owner, Scott Construction of Lake Delton, contacted the state Department of Natural Resources and is working to clean up the spill.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
